The $4.1 million Kimbell Playground project included renovation of the restrooms, a new children’s play area, new lawns, restoration of roads and pathways, lighting and irrigation improvements, as well as accessibility improvements.
Located at Geary Boulevard and Steiner Street, the playground offers a welcome respite with open space and a place to play for the community to enjoy.
A key goal was water conservation. Prior to the playground renovation, 2.5 acres of non-athletic ornamental turf was irrigated. Now, that number has been reduced to 1 acre, thanks to use of water-wise plantings and drought-resistant no-mow turf. More than 2,000 waterwise shrubs and perennials and 52 new trees have been added to playground to support habitat. Additionally, the meadows were contoured to help capture rainwater.
Public Works provided design and construction management and worked alongside general contractor Anvil Construction.
