Mission Street and Geneva Avenue Infrastructure Improvement Project

Project Update (August 2024):

The contractor continues punch list work in Segment I (Geneva Ave., from Mission St. to Prague St.) and Segment II (Mission St., from Geneva Ave. to Russia Ave.). That work is expected to wrap up in the coming weeks.

In September, the contractor will mobilize to Segment IV. We were planning to continue working sequentially into Segment III however due to contractor availability, we now plan to have them start in Segment IV. The specialized contractor is scheduled to start roadway deck repairs on the I-280 overpass bridge. The work in Segment IV is anticipated to take approximately 5 months to complete.

Project Description:
San Francisco Public Works, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), and the San Francisco Public Utilities are partnering to bring safety improvements and infrastructure upgrades to the Excelsior and Outer Mission neighborhoods. The Mission Street and Geneva Avenue Infrastructure Improvement Project includes approximately forty sidewalk bulb-outs, upgraded traffic signals at twenty locations, sewer main replacement at ten locations, concrete street base replacement work and street repaving throughout the project area. The project limits are:

  • Geneva Avenue: Prague Street to Mission Street
  • Mission Street: Geneva Avenue to Highway 280 Overpass (Trumbull Street)

Mission Street and Geneva Avenue are part of San Francisco's Vision Zero High Injury Network - the 13% of city streets where 75% of the severe and fatal collisions occur. The City and County of San Francisco adopted Vision Zero as a policy in 2014, committing to build better and safer streets, educate the public on traffic safety, enforce traffic laws, and adopt policy changes that save lives. The goal is to create a culture that prioritizes traffic safety and to ensure that mistakes on our roadways don’t result in serious injuries or death. The result of this collaborative, citywide effort will be safer, more livable streets as we work to eliminate traffic fatalities.

Once construction starts, we'll be sending regular e-updates to inform neighbors about the current and upcoming scopes of work, possible impacts, weekend work, completed project milestones, etc. Neighbors interested in receiving e-updates could SIGN-UP HERE.

Project Sequencing & Duration

The overall project duration is anticipated to be approximately 3 years. However, in order to minimize any impacts associated with construction, this project will be completed in segments. A completion timeline has been placed on each segment to minimize the time it is under construction. There will be an overlap in segments as work is completed in one segment and starts on the next one. The segments are as follows:

Segment I
Geneva Avenue (Mission Street to Prague Street)
(Approximately 11.5 months / November 2022 – November 2023)

Segment II
Mission Street (Geneva Avenue to Russia Avenue)
(Approximately 10 months / September 2023 – June 2024)
*** Note: Upon competion of Segment II, the contractor will mobilize to Segment IV ***

Segment III
Mission Street (Russia Avenue to Theresa Street)
(Approximately 11 months / January 2025 – November 2025)

Segment IV
