Bartlett Street Streetscape Improvement Project

The Bartlett Street/Mercado Plaza project lies between 21st and 22nd Street in the heart of the San Francisco Mission District. Building on the ideas of the Mission Streetscape Plan, a 2-year community-based effort led by the San Francisco Planning Department (2008-2010) and the more recent placemaking efforts of the Mission Community Market, the Bartlett Streetscape Improvement Project will provide a beautiful, safe and much needed public space for a wide variety of community programs and bring diverse communities together. The goal for the project is to create a flexible urban space that can provide opportunities for gathering, meeting neighbors and enjoying the vibrant life of the Mission District.

A long‐term community‐based design has been developed by a local partnership between the San Francisco Public Works, Planning Department, and local design/build firm ReBar. The project will install new roadway paving, wider sidewalks, speed tables, and bike parking. New pergola structures will be installed (separately from this project) as permanent shelters for Farmer’s markets and community events. Street trees will act as a gateway into the plaza and new lighting will increase safety and visibility. The revitalization of Bartlett Street will serve to be a space for families, local artists, and merchants.
