Junipero Serra Boulevard Pavement Renovation & Sewer Replacement Project

Project Description

San Francisco Public Works and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission have partnered to complete infrastructure improvements on Junipero Serra Blvd. as part of the Junipero Serra Boulevard Pavement Renovation & Sewer Replacement Project. The project limits are Junipero Serra Boulevard between Sloat Blvd. and 19th Avenue. Our partnership allows us to minimize impacts to the public by consolidating our work whenever possible.

Construction is anticipated to begin in February 2023 with completion expected in late December 2023. San Francisco Public Works will manage the project during construction. The allowable work hours are 7 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday. Weekend work is allowed however none is anticipated at this time.

This project will include sewer main replacement, curb ramp installation, street base repairs, traffic signal work, grinding (removal of existing asphalt) and repaving. Note: Not all blocks will include sewer main replacement work. The sewer work will happen in the Southbound lanes of Junipero Serra Blvd.

The first phase of work on a block will include sewer main replacement. Once the new sewer main has been installed, our engineers will review video of the sewer laterals to determine which, if any, need to be replaced. The sewer laterals are the connection between the main and the curb/sidewalk. Note: Sewer laterals are only replaced on an as-needed basis depending on the condition of the existing line. Sewer service will not be interrupted during construction. Please continue to use your household and business plumbing as usual.

This project will also include traffic signal work at the Holloway Ave. and Winston Dr. intersections.

Once the sewer work and traffic signal work is complete, crews will begin installing curb ramps at several intersections along the project limits. The intersections scheduled for curb ramp work include the following:

- Junipero Serra and Stratford Drive
- Junipero Serra and Garfield Street
- Junipero Serra and Winston Drive
- Junipero Serra and Mercedes Way
- Junipero Serra and Stonecrest Drive
- Junipero Serra and Moncada Way
- Junipero Serra and Ocean Avenue (near Commodore Sloat Elementary School)
- Junipero Serra and Darrien Way

Once all the aforementioned work is complete, crews will start prepping the area for final paving. Preparations will include concrete street base replacement work. This task will require the contractor saw-cut, excavate the broken concrete, and pour fresh cement. Replacing any damaged/broken street base now will help prolong the durability of the new pavement. This will happen at several locations along Junipero Serra Blvd.
